VERSIONE IN ITALIANO

The patriarch of the Armenian Catholic Church, Raphael Bedros XXI Minassian, speaks with despondency to SIR, the press agency of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, and launches yet another alarm over what is happening around the Lachin corridor, the only land connection between Upper Karabakh and the Republic of Armenia.

“They had promised – says the patriarch to SIR – to keep the road open and instead the corridor has remained surrounded and blocked” for 8 months now: “It is a crime, a crime against humanity. There are children, the elderly, the sick, starving people. And in the face of this scenario of desperation, nobody does anything. At least declare that a new genocide is taking place”.

During the Angelus on Sunday 29 January 2023, Pope Francis raised his cry for the difficult humanitarian crisis in the Southern Caucasus.

“Every international effort must be made to find peaceful solutions for the good of the people. I am close to all those who, in the middle of winter, are forced to face these inhumane conditions”.

It was the appeal renewed by the Pope who did not fail to look at the “serious humanitarian situation in the Corridor of Lachin”.

Over the months nothing has been done and the situation has become increasingly tragic, as the Patriarch of the Armenian Catholic Church points out when speaking of genocide while Armenia is calling for an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council.

Unfortunately, the story of the South Caucasus is just one of the many dramatic humanitarian crises completely ignored by the West and by the wealthy globalist philanthropists who have “torn their clothes” to pieces over the interruption of the agreement to export Ukrainian wheat on the Black Sea route although the Russia has demonstrated the non-compliance with the agreements by Kiev and the European Union but even the use by Ukraine of that corridor for arms trafficking.

In the same conditions as the Armenian children are the Syrian ones, in particular the inhabitants of Rojava (Northeast) controlled by the jihadist mercenaries of Turkey, and the Yemeni ones.

But with the exception of the Pope, no Western government speaks of it as if the two great activists for the defense of Ukraine, the Italian premier Giorgia Meloni and the German president of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen, had only at heart the fate of white Europeans and not that of black Africans or Asians.

The two damsels in the service of NATO (controlled by Bill Gates) and of the American president Joseph Biden have in fact “ears as merchants” (of weapons, it is fair to point it out …) in the face of the appeals of Christians, including Italians, for the abolition of sanctions in Syria, which were slightly diluted in an almost useless way only after the terrible earthquake that occurred in the night between 5 and 6 February 2023.

The US has recently confirmed all the policies of military and geopolitical control of the crisis zones of the Middle East with related strategies of oppression of the population.

The European Churches have reiterated their appeal for lifting the ongoing blockade of Upper Karabakh in the Southern Caucasus region by reopening the Lachin Corridor.

The Corridor is the only road that links the Armenian enclave (also referred to as Artsakh by Armenians) to the Republic of Armenia.

The Lachin Corridor

Despite the trilateral ceasefire agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia brokered by Russia in November 2020, the movement of people, vehicles and goods to and from the territory has been blocked by Azerbaijan since 12 December 2022.

Major humanitarian crisis

The over seven-month blockade is seriously affecting the lives and living conditions of 120,000 ethnic Armenians living there, including 30,000 children, who are lacking food, medication, electricity, and fuel.

“This is a crime against humanity,” said Raphaël Bedros XXI Minassian, the Patriarch of Cilicia of the Armenians, in a message to the Sir news agency.

“There are children, elderly people, sick people, hungry people and in this desperate scenario nobody is doing anything,” the Patriarch lamented.

The Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the World Council of Churches (WCC) have also expressed their concerns for the humanitarian crisis in Upper Karabakh, and reiterated the need for urgent and immediate action by the international community.

“The humanitarian crisis in the blockaded enclave of Upper-Karabakh (Artsakh) is escalating into tragic levels of experiences with the prolonged deprivations and sufferings of civilians,” reads a joint letter they addressed last week to the European Union. “Their fundamental human rights are increasingly violated on a daily basis”.

Need for Armenia and Azerbaijan to normalize their relations

The WCC and the CEC therefore urge the European Union and the entire international community “to step up immediately their efforts and act without delay to bring the blockade to an end in order to save the lives of the Artsakh residents and to restore and respect their fundamental rights and freedoms.”

The letter also emphasizes the crucial need for Armenia and Azerbaijan to normalize their relations after decades of hostilities through a “sustained dialogue” between Baku and the breakaway Republic of Artsakh.

“We reiterate our firm conviction that lasting peace could be built only on the genuine commitment of all interested parties in negotiations who take seriously the full observance of all human rights and the fundamental freedom of all people based on mutual trust and respect,” said the letter.

“We continue to hope and pray for the ending of this blockade so that peace, harmony and justice may prevail.”

Border conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan

The border conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed region of Upper Karabakh and surrounding districts has its origins in the early 20th century.

However, it broke out into a full-scale war in the early 1990s following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. That war was won by Armenia resulting in the expulsion  of Azerbaijanis from the Armenian-controlled areas.

The “Second Nagorno-Karabakh War” in late 2020 resulted instead in a clear-cut military victory by Azerbaijan, which regained all of the occupied territories surrounding Upper Karabakh as well as capturing one-third of Upper Karabakh itself.

Since the ceasefire mediated by Russia, skirmishes have continued and tensions have continued leading to the blockade of the Lachin corridor.
