Ukraine’s armed forces have lost more than 1,100 troops in killed or wounded south of Donetsk over one week, the Russian Defense Ministry said, as reported by TASS Russian News Agency.

“Over the past period in that area, the adversary has lost over 1,000 troops, killed or wounded, 15 armored fighting vehicles, 22 vehicles and 7 artillery guns. Over a week, coordinated actions by Russian units have thwarted eight enemy attacks, continuing to deliver strikes on the concentrations of the Ukrainian army’s manpower and hardware,” it said in a statement.

The ministry noted that the surrendering Ukrainian soldiers complain of low morale among the personnel of the 36th and 38th Ukrainian marine brigades due to substantial losses.

The three-month-long counteroffensive attempt proved this line to be prophetic: having failed to reach its objectives the Ukrainian military has lost over 66,000 personnel and 7,600 weapons, according to calculations estimated up to a week ago

U.S. Navy R-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft driven away by a Russian MIG-31

On 18 September 2023, Russian airspace control systems detected an aerial target approaching the State border of the Russian Federation over the Barents Sea. To identify the aerial target and prevent a violation of the State border of the Russian Federation, a MiG-31 fighter aircraft from the air defence duty force of the Northern Fleet was scrambled.

The Russian fighter jet identified the aerial target as a U.S. Navy R-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft. As the Russian fighter approached, a foreign military aircraft made a U-turn away from the State border of the Russian Federation. There was no violation of the State border of the Russian Federation.

Russian forces conducted a long-range strike on Ukrainian warehouses storing Western-supplied weapons, including long-range missiles and depleted uranium shells, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.

In a statement on Monday, the ministry said the military had conducted an overnight high-precision attack on Ukrainian facilities using air-launched assets and drones. The strikes targeted “the Kiev regime’s sites storing Storm Shadow cruise missiles, depleted uranium ammunition,” the statement said.

Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian authorities reported several explosions in the western Khmelnitsky Region, which they said damaged a production facility. Local media also reported blasts in the port city of Izmail in the southern Odessa Region.

Ukraine received Storm Shadow missiles, which have a range of more than 250km, from the UK earlier this year and used them to attack civilian targets and infrastructure in Russia’s Crimean Peninsula and Donbass, according to local officials.

The decision to arm Kiev with depleted uranium shells was made by both the UK and US. The rounds, which have high armor-piercing capabilities, are meant to be used by British-made Challenger and US-designed M1 Abrams tanks.
