Following Russia’s onslaught in the Kharkov area, the Ukrainian armed forces intensified shelling attacks of the borderline Belgorod Region. The US and NATO are treading carefully as they assess Russia’s actions. Despite concerns about the effectiveness of aid to the Kiev regime, the West continues to offer support to the Ukrainian army.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has exceeded his mandate by calling for Ukraine to be allowed use Western-donated weapons for strikes deep inside Russia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.
Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has made a statement that Ukraine should be able to strike military targets located on the internationally recognized Russian territory.
“The time has come for allies to consider whether they should lift some of the restrictions they have put on the use of weapons they have donated to Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said in an interview with the Economist. “Especially now when a lot of the fighting is going on in Kharkov, close to the border [with Russia], to deny Ukraine the possibility of using these weapons against legitimate military targets on Russian territory makes it very hard for them to defend themselves.”
However, Stoltenberg dismissed the idea that NATO members can use their air defense systems to shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine. He also spoke against the alliance’s boots on the ground in Ukraine. “We don’t have any intention to send NATO ground troops into Ukraine,” he said. “We will not be party to the conflict.”
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Western weapons are already being used on Russian soil.
“American weapons are already being used against a wide variety of facilities outside the combat zone,” Lavrov pointed out. “We proceed from the fact that American and other Western weapons are hitting targets on Russian territory, primarily civilian infrastructure and residential neighborhoods.”
Thirteen people have been killed and 116 wounded in Ukrainian shelling attacks on Russian residential areas over the last week, Rodion Miroshnik, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s special envoy, said.
“A total of 129 civilians were affected by the Nazi shelling attacks: 116 people were wounded, including four minors, 13 people were killed. <…> The past week was marked by an increased number of hits by long-range projectiles on civilian facilities. The LPR was hit by French SCALP and US-made ATACMS missiles. In Donetsk, the Ukrainian army used an MGM-140 ATACMS missile with a cluster warhead. The Crimean Peninsula was also hit with ATACMS missiles this week,“ he wrote on his Telegram channel.
Military analyst Colonel (Ret.) Nikolay Shulgin told Nezavisimaya Gazeta that all of this is happening amid Russia’s non-strategic nuclear forces drills “which Moscow and Minsk tie with the possible arrival of NATO servicemen in the Ukrainian armed forces.”, as reported by TASS Russian News Agency.
Russian UN Envoy: “Ukraine uses weapons of almost all NATO states against Russian civilians”
The Ukrainian armed forces use military potential of almost every NATO country to attack Russian civilians and civilians infrastructure, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said, speaking during an open Security Council debate, dedicated to protection of civilians amid an armed conflict.
“The military potential of almost all NATO countries is being used to deliberately strike not military facilities, but densely populated areas and to exterminate the civilian population of Russia,” he said, providing repeated Ukrainian strikes at civilian targets in Belgorod, Donetsk, Gorlovka and the Bryansk Region as an example.
“The West does not shy away from shipping depleted uranium munitions, landmines that are un-defusable and un-extractable. There are numerous examples of US-made HIMARS systems and UK-made Storm Shadow missiles being used at civilian targets,” the diplomat noted.
He called the information about the conflict in Ukraine, contained in UN Secretary General’s report on protection of civilians in armed conflict a “regrettable example of double standards.”
“Unlike the description of the situation in the Gaza Strip, the Secretary General forgets to point out that the special military operation was initiated in response to years-long shellings and bombings of Donbass. We are offered to forget about thousands of killed civilians, which included over one hundred children by the beginning of 2022. Second, an impression is being made that there are no daily strikes at civilians and civilian targets in Donbass, in Lugansk, in Belgorod and in other regions of Russia, carried out via Western-made weapons,” Nebenzya underscored.

May 12 tragedy in Belgorod
One should not expect the West to say anything about the May 12 tragedy in Belgorod,
experts polled by Izvestia said. As before, Ukraine’s allies will most likely keep quiet about this latest attack against Russian civilians. A section of a residential apartment building has completely collapsed following a Ukrainian strike, killing 15 and sending 20 people to the hospital, including at least two children and three rescue workers.
“According to the Ministry of Defense, the shelling of Belgorod from Ukraine began around 11.40 am Moscow time. The Tochka-U tactical missile system, Vilkha multiple launch missile systems and the Czech RM-70 Vampire were used” Izvestia wrote blaming the use of Western Weapons.
“During the repelling of the attack, Russian air defense systems destroyed six Tochka-U missiles, four Vampire MLRS missiles and two Vilkha MLRS missiles. Fragments of one of the downed Tochka-U missiles damaged a residential building in the city of Belgorod,” the department said.
Bogdan Bezpalko, a member of the Russian Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations, thinks that the West could react in two ways to the Belgorod incident. “The first is total indifference,” he told Izvestia. “Western leaders have already claimed that Ukraine has the right to deliver strikes on Russian territory – this is considered by them as ‘self-defense.’

Ordinary European residents are unaware of such shelling attacks on civilians in Belgorod, Mateusz Piskorski, a political scientist and columnist for the Mysl Polska newspaper, told Izvestia.According to him, leading Western news outlets will not cover this incident, instead focusing on events in Ukraine.
30 children living in Russia’s frontline regions have been killed
A total of 30 children living in Russia’s frontline regions have been killed and 95 injured as a result of Ukrainian shelling since the beginning of the year,
Russian Foreign Ministry’s special envoy for the crimes of the Kiev regime Rodion Miroshnik said.
“Now 11 regions of Russia are in the frontline zone, they are being shelled every day,” he said at a press conference timed to coincide with Children’s Day. “A total of 125 children have fallen victim since the beginning of the year. Of these, 30 children have died and 95 have received injuries of different severities,” the envoy emphasized.
Ukrainian forces fired at least 2,127 shells at the civilian facilities of Russian frontline settlements over the past week, Miroshnik added.
Almost 700 facilities have been damaged in Belgorod over one week by shelling attacks by Ukrainian troops, city Mayor Valentin Demidov said.
“Over the past week, as a result of shelling attacks, 687 facilities have sustained new damage, 213 facilities have been restored as well as 120 windows and 145 balconies have been repaired over one week. Some 2,620 facilities are currently being restored. Some 161 vehicles have been damaged over the week,” he said at a meeting with the regional governor.
