Russian Naval group will continue Accomplishing Missions in Caribbean Sea
A group of the Northern Fleet’s ships led by the frigate Admiral Gorshkov has wrapped up its unofficial visit and left the Havana port in Cuba to continue accomplishing long-distance deployment missions, the Fleet’s press office reported on Monday.
“Today a group of the Northern Fleet’s ships led by the frigate Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov has completed its unofficial visit and left the port of Havana in the Republic of Cuba,” the press office said in a statement.
After leaving the territorial waters of the Republic of Cuba, the Russian Northern Fleet’s naval group will continue accomplishing missions in accordance with its long-distance deployment plan, it said.
As Russia’s Defense Ministry reported earlier, the tactical surface action group comprising the frigate Admiral Gorshkov and the Project 885M nuclear-powered submarine Kazan practiced employing high-precision weapons during drills before calling at the Havana port.
The frigate Admiral Gorshkov and the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan are the carriers of advanced precision-strike weapons, in particular, Zircon hypersonic missiles, Kalibr cruise missiles and Oniks anti-ship missiles.
The first stage of the long-distance deployment of the Russian Northern Fleet’s naval ships, which have left the port of Havana, was rated “excellent,” the commander of the Admiral Gorshkov frigate, Captain 2nd Rank Pavel Konov, told TASS in an interview.
“We have accomplished all that we planned. We are ready to continue to fulfill combat service tasks,” the naval commander stressed. “Nobody cancels the tasks, they were set and will be dealt with further, with the same quality,” he added.
The United States continues to keep a close eye on the activities of Russian warships in the Caribbean, US National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said.
“It’s important to keep it in perspective. The Russians do this every few years. They make an excursion to the Caribbean, into Latin American waters. It’s not new. Did it under Trump, did it under Obama, did it under President Bush. We watch it closely and monitor it as we probably should,” he told a briefing.

An American attack submarine at the US base of Guantanamo Bay. Cuba: “Provocative Escalation”
The Cuban Foreign Ministry has in a statement condemned the arrival of a US nuclear-powered submarine in the Guantanamo Bay.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly rejects the arrival of a nuclear-powered submarine in the Guantanamo Bay on July 5, 2023, that stayed until July 8 at the US military base located there, which is a provocative escalation of the United States, whose political or strategic motives are not known,” the statement reads.
“The presence of a nuclear submarine there at this moment makes it imperative to wonder what is the military reason behind this action in this peaceful region of the world; what target is it aiming at and what is the strategic purpose it pursues,” the ministry added.
An American attack submarine has docked at the US base of Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, a day after a four-ship Russian task force sailed into Havana on a long-range expedition.
USS Helena, a Los Angeles-class boat, arrived on Thursday for a “routine port visit,” the US Southern Command said in a statement.
“The vessel’s location and transit were previously planned,” SOUTHCOM added, noting that the Helena is “conducting its global maritime security and national defense mission.” AP described the submarine’s arrival as “a show of force” by Washington, in response to the presence of Russian ships so close to US shores.
A four-vessel task force of the Russian Navy’s Northern Fleet sailed into Havana on Wednesday. Leading the group was the missile frigate Admiral Gorshkov, along with the Yasen-class nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, two of Russia’s most modern naval assets.
Two support ships, the oil tanker Pashin and salvage tug Nikolay Chiker, accompanied the task force to the Caribbean, in what Moscow described last month as a “long-distance expedition” intended to “show the flag” and “ensure a naval presence in operationally important areas.”
The Russian Defense Ministry has made no further comments on the flotilla’s mission, leading to intense speculation in the US that its presence could be a message about the actions of Washington and its allies in Ukraine.
“Clearly this is them signaling their displeasure about what we’re doing for Ukraine,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said earlier this week, adding that the US had “no indication and no expectation that nuclear weapons will be at play here.”
The Cuban government has since stated that the Russian ships were not equipped with nuclear missiles, and that their mission was in full accordance with international law. The Gorshkov and the Kazan practiced long-range sea strikes while en route to Cuba, as several US Navy vessels shadowed them from a distance.
“We of course take it seriously, but these exercises don’t pose a threat to the US,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters on Wednesday.
The Kazan was commissioned in 2021, while the Gorshkov entered service in 2018. The Helena, on the other hand, dates back to 1987.
On Wednesday, just before the Helena was dispatched to Cuba, the US Navy announced that one of its crew members had died last month. The body of Sonar Technician Submarine 3rd Class Timothy Sanders was discovered on board the submarine while it was moored at Naval Station Norfolk on May 24. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is investigating the case.
