Another Ukrainian false statement on ZNPP fire exposed within 24 hours — Russian envoy

Another false statement made by the Kiev regime on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) fire was exposed within 24 hours, with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) mission not having discovered any traces of burnt tires on the damaged cooling tower, Russian Permanent Envoy to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said.

The Ukrainian side has again placed responsibility for the station fire on Russia, he stressed: “It was particularly the Russian side that allegedly set lots of automobile tires aflame on the territory of the cooling tower.”

“The IAEA’s information summary in no uncertain terms disproved the Ukrainian case, saying that when visiting the damaged cooling tower, the agency’s experts did not see any remnants of automobile tires,” the envoy wrote on his Telegram channel. “Consequently, the Ukrainian false statement was exposed within 24 hours,” he noted.

Rosatom CEO slams Ukrainian drone attack on ZNPP ‘new level of nuclear aggression’

The Ukrainian attack on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is a new level of nuclear aggression, Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Russia’s state nuclear power operator Rosatom, said.

NATO-KIEV Terrorism becomes Nuclear Nightmares after Drones Attack on Zaporozhye Atomic Plant

“What happened at the Zaporozhye NPP last night is a level of targeted aggression directed at the infrastructure of the nuclear facility, which has never been seen before,” Likhachev told reporters on the sidelines of the Army 2024 international military and technical forum.

According to the Rosatom CEO, the attack, among other things, was also aimed at firefighters who arrived to extinguish the fire. “At 8:20 p.m. [5:20 p.m. GMT] yesterday the first kamikaze drone came in, at 8:32 p.m. [5:32 p.m. GMT] the second one. Again, the distance of 12 minutes is a desire to cover not only the object, but also the firefighters, who within five to six minutes, of course, arrive at the site,” he said. The fire lasted about three hours, burning including plastice. “Thanks to the actions of firefighters, the Emergencies Ministry, plant employees, the fire was localized some time by 11:00 p.m. [8:00 p.m. GMT], but very serious damage was done to the cooling towers. <…> And in this sense, a blow was dealt to the future of the nuclear power plant, when we will bring it to capacity, and we still have to answer the question whether this damage is compensable or whether we will have to carry out large-scale reconstruction work with the possible replacement of the first cooling tower,” Likhachev said.

Earlier, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev called on the IAEA to name the party responsible for the attack on the ZNPP. At the same time, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, without identifying the party responsible for the attack,

Fire at ZNPP burning near cooling towers

The fire that broke out at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant following Ukrainian shelling of the nearby city of Energodar is burning near the cooling towers, the plant said.

“As a result of Ukrainian shelling, a fire broke out on the riverbank in the area of the ZNPP’s cooling towers. Emergency Situations Ministry employees are working at the scene of the fire. The blaze is being extinguished. The fire did not affect the plant’s operation in any way,” the plant said on Telegram.

Earlier, Zaporozhye Region Governor Yevgeny Balitsky said the ZNPP’s cooling systems caught fire following a Ukrainian strike. According to the official, all six reactors at the plant are in cold shutdown, there is no danger of an explosion. He said the radiation background around the plant and the city of Energodar remained normal.

Kamikaze drones were used in Sunday’s attack, the facility’s communications director, Evgeniya Yashina, said in a statement. According to Yashina, the attack marked the first time that Ukrainian forces were able to seriously damage the plant’s infrastructure.

Responding to the incident, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to perform “at least some imitation of work” and ensure the plant’s security. Zakharova also condemned the shelling of the plant as a terrorist” act.

“The terrorists in Kiev, under the leadership of the collective West, destroyed their country, ruined the people of Ukraine, undermined global energy and food security, and now they have begun the nuclear terror of the continent,” she declared.

The cooling tower has suffered serious damage

Russia’s nuclear power company Rosatom says a cooling tower at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia power plant has suffered “serious damage” from a fire that broke out in the past few hours.

“Two strikes by military drones” from Kiev forces “were carried out” yesterday evening “on one of the two cooling towers, causing a fire inside the plant, which was extinguished by emergency units,” the statement reads, cited by the Russian news agency Tass.

“However, the interior of the cooling tower has suffered serious damage: the danger of a possible collapse of the structure will be assessed by specialists when the situation allows,” Rosatom added. The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, assured that “there is no impact on nuclear safety.” According to Ukrainian President Zelensky, the fire was started by “Russian occupiers.”

IAEA says its experts saw dark smoke in ZNPP’s northern area following explosions

The International Atomic Energy Agency said its experts at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant heard explosions and saw dark smoke rising in the northern part of the plant.

“IAEA experts witnessed strong dark smoke coming from ZNPP’s northern area following multiple explosions heard in the evening. Team was told by ZNPP of an alleged drone attack today on one of the cooling towers located at the site. No impact has been reported for nuclear safety,” the agency said on X.

Earlier, it was reported that Ukrainian forces struck ZNPP’s cooling systems with a kamikaze drone. According to the plant, the hit caused a fire in the area of cooling towers, which was later brought under control. The fire had no effect on the plant’s operation.

The IAEA maintains an observer mission at the ZNPP and has condemned the repeated strikes against the plant. However, the UN agency refuses to attribute blame for these attacks, claiming that it does not have “indisputable evidence” of Kiev’s culpability.

In a presentation to the UN General Assembly last month, Russia’s deputy representative to the organization, Dmitry Polyansky, displayed wreckage of a Ukrainian drone that hit the facility, accusing Kiev of posing “the only real threat to nuclear facilities in Ukraine today.”
