How Iranian FATTAH-1 Hypersonic Missiles Penetrated Israel’s Air Defense System
German magazine Der Spiegel reported that during a recent missile attack on Israel, Iranian Fattah-1 hypersonic missiles were able to overcome Israel’s air defense system. According to the publication, several missiles reached their targets, causing serious destruction and casting doubt on the effectiveness of Israel’s air defenses in the face of the use of the latest Iranian weapons.
Iran’s Fattah-1 missile, recently unveiled by Tehran, is considered one of the most advanced hypersonic weapons in the country’s arsenal. Its speed and maneuverability make it difficult to reach most existing air defense systems. The defeat of Iron Dome and other Israeli air defenses has become a wake-up call for military analysts, who note that the event could change the balance of power in the region.
The missile attack, which used Fattah-1, was part of a large-scale attack carried out by Iran amid rising tensions between the two countries. Israel has previously aggressively upgraded its missile defense systems to meet threats posed by both Iran and its allies such as Hezbollah and Hamas. However, the use of hypersonic technologies has become a new challenge for Israeli air defenses.

Fattah-1 Description
Fattah-1 is an Iranian medium-range ballistic missile developed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and unveiled in June 2023. It is Iran’s first hypersonic ballistic missile. According to Iran, its high maneuverability and speed helps it to evade missile defense systems. In November 2023, Iran unveiled a newer version of the missile, Fattah-2.

Its name, meaning “conqueror” or “bringer of victory”, “victor” in Arabic, is in reference to Al-Fattāḥ, was selected by the Supreme Leader of Iran. The missile has been reported to have the capability to carry nuclear warheads should Iran further pursue its nuclear program.
According to Iran, it can maneuver in and out of the atmosphere, and is capable of bypassing missile defenses. Its successor, Fattah-2 is a hypersonic glide vehicle and offers substantially more maneuverability compared to a ballistic warhead travelling in a more predictable arc pattern.
