Russia has granted Syria’s former President Bashar Assad and his family members asylum, a source in the Kremlin said.

According to the source in the Kremlin, Assad and his family have arrived in Moscow. Being guided by humanitarian considerations, Russia has granted asylum for them.
“Russia has always spoken in favor of a political settlement of the Syrian crisis. We insist that the UN-mediated talks be resumed,” the source said.

Syrian President Bashar Assad has left Damascus amid ongoing developments in the country, where militants from terrorist groups have launched a major offensive against government forces, Reuters reported, citing two Syrian army officers.
According to the official, his plane departed for an unknown destination.

Earlier, Al Jazeera TV reported that militants had entered Damascus, while Al Hadath TV claimed that the Syrian capital had fallen under the control of militant groups.
Syrian Prime Minister Mohamed Ghazi al-Khalali said he was reaching out to “all Syrians who care about this country to preserve its institutions,” in a video released after insurgents took control of the capital Damascus.

“I am in my home, I have not left it because I belong to this country and I do not know any other country. It is my homeland. A few hours later, however, he was taken and arrested by Al Qaeda jihadists.
The leader of the Syrian rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, has ordered the armed forces not to approach official institutions in Damascus, saying they will remain under the supervision of the prime minister until they are “officially” handed over.
“All military forces in the city of Damascus are strictly prohibited from approaching public institutions, which will remain under the supervision of the former prime minister until they are officially handed over,” Jolani said in a statement on Telegram, using his real name Ahmed al-Sharaa instead of his nom de guerre and adding: “It is forbidden to shoot in the air.”
Iraq has received more than 1,000 soldiers of the Syrian army who crossed the Al-Qa’im border checkpoint into the Anbar province in the western part of the republic, the Iraqi News Agency reported citing a source in the security services.
According to him, “the soldiers were welcomed and provided with required assistance.”

Lavrov: “Using Terrorism for Geopolitical goals Unacceptable”
The use of terrorists to achieve geopolitical goals, as is currently happening with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group in Syria, is unacceptable, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.
“We are absolutely convinced of the inadmissibility of using terrorists like Hayat Tahrir al-Sham to achieve geopolitical goals, as it is now being done by orchestrating the offensive in the Idlib de-escalation zone,” Lavrov stated on Sunday, after meeting with the Iranian and Turkish foreign ministers in Qatar.
The foreign ministers of Türkiye, Iran, and Russia met in Doha on Saturday to discuss the lightning rebel advance in Syria.
The militant group Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS), an offshoot of Jabhat al-Nusra, along with its allies, launched a surprise offensive against Syrian government forces last week, capturing large swaths of territory, including parts of Aleppo and the city of Hama. The Syrian military has redeployed forces to threatened regions, with the support of Russian warplanes.
Earlier this week, Lavrov suggested that the HTS offensive could be supported by the US and the UK, emphasizing that Moscow is working with Türkiye and Iran to stabilize the situation.
President Bashar Assad has vowed to “eliminate terrorists” who attacked the country and to punish their “sponsors and supporters,” amid media reports that militants received training from Ukrainian military intelligence.
Syrian media reports have claimed that the government forces have managed to neutralize a total of 2,500 terrorists, with the help of Russian air support.
The Syrian military has reported that state-backed troops operating in the Daraa and Suwayda regions in the south of the country have been redeployed and have “established a strong and cohesive defensive cordon” to repel terrorist attacks on checkpoints. The military described the raids as attempts to divert Damascus’ attention from Homs and Hama.
The government has been embroiled in several localized conflicts since 2011, when various anti-government groups first sought to unseat Assad. Jihadist forces, particularly those receiving military assistance from abroad, have emerged as dominant players among the opposition and have since been labeled by the US and other Western nations as “moderate rebels.”
In 2015, Russia intervened in the hostilities at the request of Damascus and helped Assad’s forces restore control over most of the country.
Türkiye, Iran and Russia signed an agreement in 2017 to support Syria’s territorial integrity and bring about an end to a war started by anti-government rebels.

CNN interviews Leader of Jihadist HTS in Syria who was previously linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State
CNN has published an interview with a militant islamist terrorist who is on the US wanted list and the head of the Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS) jihadist group – to discuss, among other things, his “transformation” from Al-Qaeda leader to “moderate rebel.”
The interview with Abu Mohammed al-Julani comes amid a surprise attack launched in Syria by HTS which has seen them and other militant brigades reportedly take control of the cities of Aleppo and Hama.
While CNN has labeled al-Julani as a “rebel leader,” the US, Russia, Syria, Iran, the UN and most of the international community have designated him and his organization as a terrorist group.
He had previously been a leader of al-Qaeda and the ISIS-affiliated Al-Nusra Front, all of which have been accused of multiple war crimes, including massacring hundreds of civilians and kidnappings. In 2013, the US listed al-Julani as a “specially designated global terrorist” and later announced a $10 million bounty on him.
The leader of the Lebanon-based Hezbollah militant group, Naim Qassem, has also claimed that the recent aggression in Syria has been “sponsored by America and Israel,” arguing that Washington was trying to “create chaos in Syria.”
He vowed that his group would help the Syrian government fight the HTS jihadists and called on other Arab countries to support Damascus in the battle.
