Bundestag member Sevim Dagdelen (of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice – in the cover image) has called on the German authorities to stop making “cash gifts” to Kiev after halting gas transit through Ukraine and to launch the preserved string of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
“By stopping the flow of Russian gas to Europe, Ukraine is pushing energy prices even higher. The German government and the EU are happily watching the destruction of European industry due to high energy prices,” Dagdelen wrote on her social media page X. “Launch Nord Stream at last! Stop making cash gifts to Kiev!” she urged.

On January 1, the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine was completely stopped due to Kiev’s refusal to extend the agreement. Earlier, Gazprom said that the Ukrainian side’s refusal deprived the Russian holding company of the technical and legal opportunities for supplying fuel by this route.
European gas transportation operators confirm the termination of supplies to Austria, Italy, Moldova, Slovakia and the Czech Republic via this route.
Slovak PM threatens Kiev with tough response if gas transit issue remains unresolved
Slovakia will impose tough measures against Ukraine if problems related to gas transit are not resolved, Reuters quoted Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico as saying.
According to the PM, the measures may include halting humanitarian aid as well as stopping or reducing support for refugees. In addition, Slovakia might stop emergency supplies of power for Ukraine, the agency said.
Fico added that Slovakia could also use its veto power in the EU on Ukraine-related issues.

On Monday, the Slovak prime minister said that a new round of EU consultations on gas, which was scheduled for January 7, had been disrupted as the Ukrainian delegation did not show up.
On January 1, transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine was completely stopped due to Kiev’s refusal to extend a previous agreement, which provided for pumping 40 billion cubic meters annually. Earlier, Gazprom reported that this refusal by Kiev deprived the Russian holding of the technical and legal ability to supply fuel via this route. Meanwhile, data from European gas transportation operators confirm that supplies to Austria, Italy, Moldova, Slovakia and the Czech Republic have been stopped in this direction.
Kremlin: “Putin’s contacts with Russia’s friends, including Vucic, promptly coordinated”
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s contacts with friends and partners are coordinated as soon as possible, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS, commenting on Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s statement about plans for a conversation with the Russian leader.
Vucic said earlier at a meeting of the Serbian government that the US will soon prepare sanctions against NIS (Naftna Industrija Srbije), a company in which Gazprom has a stake. The Serbian leader said that he plans to send a request for a conversation with Putin for January 25-27.
“Talks with our friends and partners at the highest and other levels will be coordinated as soon as possible,” the Kremlin spokesman told TASS when asked about the readiness to immediately organize a conversation between Putin and Vucic.

Vucic said that the US will officially announce the sanctions by January 15. Belgrade will then have 30 days until February 15 to take measures. During this period, Serbia expects to conclude an agreement on gas supplies and resolve the situation with the oil and gas company.
