With just a few days to go until US President Donald Trump takes office at the White House, the geopolitical context surrounding the war in Ukraine is becoming increasingly harsh due to the expressed desire of the NATO Secretary General to prepare Europe for World War III.
A disturbing signal comes from Poland, the current president of the EU Council, which has alerted its air force to be ready to intercept Russian missiles also on Ukrainian territory.
This action, following the authorization granted by the EU, the US and the UK to use cruise missiles supplied to Kiev by NATO countries on Russian territory, could trigger a further escalation with a direct confrontation between Russia and an Atlantic Alliance country such as Poland… With apocalyptic consequences!
Trump team’s Ukraine predictions ‘campaign bluster’
Donald Trump’s election promises to end the Ukraine conflict “in 24 hours” were driven by “a combination of campaign bluster and a lack of appreciation of the intractability” of the situation, Reuters stated on Wednesday, citing sources close to the US president-elect.
Trump repeatedly touted his ability to end hostilities between Russia and Ukraine on the campaign trail, while accusing President Joe Biden of mishandling the crisis.
Privately, members of the Trump team expect the timeline for resolving the conflict to be measured in months, the news agency said. Reuters spoke with two individuals on condition of anonymity, who described themselves as Trump associates who have discussed the issue with him.
The view aligns with public remarks by members of the future administration. Keith Kellogg, whom Trump has tapped to serve as a special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, told Fox News last week that he aims to mediate a resolution within 100 days after Inauguration Day on January 20.

Trump expressed frustration that he has to wait to be sworn in before implementing his plans, speaking at a recent press conference at his residence in Florida. Asked whether he intended to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in the first three to six months of his presidency, the politician said such a meeting would hopefully be arranged “long before six months”.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has called on members of the US-led military bloc to adopt a “wartime mindset” and significantly increase defense spending, citing supposed threats from Russia and other nations.
The bloc’s “future security is at stake,” Rutte claimed in his opening remarks at a meeting of the Military Committee in Chiefs of Defense in Brussels on Wednesday. He accused Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran of attempting to “weaken our democracies and chip away at our freedom.”
“To prevent war, we need to prepare for it. It is time to shift to a wartime mindset,”Rutte asserted, urging NATO states to fund “more and better defense capabilities.”
Rutte noted that while NATO members have increased defense investments and intensified military exercises these efforts are “not sufficient to deal with the dangers coming our way in the next four to five years.”
Rutte also prioritized backing Ukraine to “change the trajectory of the war,” in a tacit recognition of Kiev’s reversals on the conflict front line.

Poland has deployed pairs of fighters on standby and brought its air defense and ground-based radar reconnaissance systems to maximum readiness.
The General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces announced this on its page on the X social network (formerly Twitter). The measures were taken in response to massive attacks by the Russian military against targets on the territory of Ukraine, including in the western part of the country.
According to Ukrainian and Polish sources, air raid warnings on the night of January 15 covered the entire territory of Ukraine. Russian troops attacked military installations and energy infrastructure. As a result of a series of attacks, as reported by Ukrainian media, energy centers were damaged, causing emergency power outages in several regions.

US must not allow its relations with Russia to escalate into wars — incoming CIA chief
The United States cannot allow its hostile relations with Russia to “boil over into unintended wars,” US President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for CIA chief, John Ratcliffe, believes.
“I defer to the president on US policy toward Russia,” he said, as quoted in the list of remarks from members of the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Moscow has repeatedly denied assertions that it represents a threat to any NATO member states and has instead accused the US-led bloc of waging a proxy war against Russia and encroaching on its territory.
Last month, President Vladimir Putin said that practically all NATO states are currently at war with Russia.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also noted on Tuesday that history appears to be repeating itself, suggesting that there were “obvious parallels” between Moscow’s current confrontation with NATO and the attempts of Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler to take over Russia after subjugating dozens of European countries.

On Tuesday, Rutte announced that NATO would bolster its presence in the Baltic Sea – a strategic area for Russian naval operations and energy exports – by launching a new mission under the pretext of protecting undersea infrastructure.
The NATO chief revealed that this presence will involve frigates, maritime patrol aircraft, and a “small fleet of naval drones” that are expected to provide “enhanced surveillance and deterrence.”
The announcement follows an incident involving a Cook Islands-registered oil tanker, the Eagle S, which allegedly damaged the Estlink 2 power cable connecting Finland and Estonia last month. The EU has warned that it could impose sanctions on Moscow over what EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has described as the “deliberate destruction of Europe’s critical infrastructure” using a “shadow fleet” of tankers, which supposedly includes the Eagle S.
While the tanker has been detained by Finnish authorities, no conclusive evidence has been presented regarding its involvement in the alleged sabotage. Moscow has not commented on the incident.
US national security advisor: “ US could cut off support to Ukraine to achieve peace”
The US has the option to end support to Ukraine unless it agrees to give up claims to some territories in order to achieve peace, but is unwilling to do so, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said.
“It’s true we could cut Ukraine off. We could say: You get nothing more unless you accept that Russia gets X percent of your territory. That is an option available to us,” he said in an interview with The New York Times. “Should we do that? I do not agree.”
The US forcing Ukraine to accept certain peace terms would “surely shatter” NATO unity, the official went on to say.
According to Sullivan, the fact that the US is supplying weapons to Ukraine doesn’t mean Washington should dictate its desired outcome of the conflict to Ukraine.
