On the evening of March 3, 2025, the roar of powerful engines was heard over Bulgarian territory: a B-52H Stratofortress strategic bomber of the US Air Force entered the country’s airspace, presumably to participate in joint exercises with ground forces.
B-52H Stratofortress of the USAF capable of carrying nuclear and conventional weapons
This legendary aircraft, capable of carrying nuclear and conventional weapons, has become a visible symbol of NATO’s military presence in Eastern Europe,
underlining the alliance’s readiness to strengthen its position in the region. While the Bulgarians were watching the flight, local experts and authorities began to discuss the objectives and scope of the operation, which appears to be aimed at strengthening cooperation between allies in a tense geopolitical situation.
The B-52H Stratofortress, developed in the 1950s by Boeing, remains a key element of US strategic power. The heavy bomber, currently stationed at Minnott Air Force Base in North Dakota, can fly thousands of kilometers without refueling and carry up to 31 tons of weapons.
Its appearance over Bulgaria, a NATO member since 2004, did not surprise military analysts: such missions are regularly conducted as part of the Bomber Task Force (BTF) to practice joint operations with alliance partners
. The current flight is believed to be related to training for cooperation with Bulgarian ground forces, although there has been no official comment from the Pentagon or the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense.
The context of this event is tied to the intensification of US military operations in Europe in 2025. In February, two B-52Hs from the 5th Bomb Wing arrived at RAF Fairford in the UK as part of Bomber Task Force 25-2, The Aviationist reported.
the strategic importance of the Black Sea region for NATO
The bombers have already taken part in joint exercises with Finland, Sweden and Lithuania, including a rare bombing mission at a Lithuanian range, Air & Space Forces Magazine noted. The flight over Bulgaria continues this series, highlighting the strategic importance of the Black Sea region for NATO.
Yesterday, two Iskander-M ballistic missiles hit the Panama-flagged container ship MSC LEVANTE F – reportedly Swiss-owned – soon after it arrived in Odesa on March 1. Moscow has launched missile strike to ‘sink’ the cargo ship amid unconfirmed Russian claims it was carrying British weapons for use by Ukraine.
According to United24 Media, around the same time, two B-52Hs were deployed to Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base in Romania, indicating an increased US presence near Ukraine’s borders.
Bulgaria has always played a crucial role in the CIA-run trafficking of American weapons on the international market.
Following the nuclear deal signed by Starmer himself with former US President Joseph Biden, Trump seems intent on supplying nuclear missiles to the UK, which the latter could then send to Zelensky.
“The United States intends to redeploy nuclear weapons to British soil for the first time in two decades, marking a turning point in NATO’s strategy amid rising tensions with Russia,” writes Russian military website Avia.Pro.
