PUTIN declares EASTER TRUCE in Ukraine War. HOLY FIRE in Flight from Jerusalem to Moscow

By Carlo Domenico Cristofori
Russia will suspend all military operations during an Easter truce, which will be in effect from 18:00 Moscow time on April 19 to 00:00 Moscow time on April 21 – lasting a total of 30 hours.
This ceasefire was announced today by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov. Moscow hopes Kiev will also observe the pause in hostilities. President Putin emphasized that Ukraine’s response will reveal its genuine willingness and ability to engage in peace negotiations.
Guided by humanitarian considerations, Russia will halt all hostilities from 18:00 Moscow time on April 19 until 00:00 Moscow time on April 21.
“I order a ceasefire during this period. We expect the Ukrainian side to follow our example,” Putin declared.
Easter is the Christian holiday par excellence, a symbol of rebirth, hope, and light. But perhaps not everyone knows that Catholics and Orthodox do not always celebrate it on the same day. In fact, in most years, the two Churches find themselves commemorating the Resurrection of Christ on different dates.
The “Miracle” of 2025: A Common Date for Easter for Orthodox and Catholics
In 2025, however, something rare and extraordinary happens: Easter falls on the same day for both.
The Catholic Church and most Protestant Churches follow the Gregorian calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to correct the inaccuracy of the Julian calendar, which accumulated days compared to the solar year. The Orthodox Church, however, still follows the Julian calendar, which dates back to Julius Caesar (45 BC). This calendar is now 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar.
The calculation of the date of Easter is based on a criterion common to both Churches: Easter is celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox.
However, differences between calendars, and also in the way in which the date of the equinox and the ecclesiastical full moon is established, mean that Catholic and Orthodox Easter almost never coincide.
Easter will be celebrated on April 20th by Catholics and Orthodox.
This is because:
- The spring equinox falls on March 20th (according to both calendars).
- The first full moon after that will be April 13th.
- The first Sunday after that is April 20th, and it matches in both systems of calculation.
A rare event, which has not occurred since 2017 and will only return again in 2028.
St. Andrew the First-Called Foundation heading to Russia with Holy Fire taken in Jerusalem
A plane with a delegation of Russia’s St. Andrew the First-Called Foundation carrying the Holy Fire has departed from Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv and is now heading to Moscow.
The lamp with the fire will be delivered to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Russia’s capital.

The descent of the Holy Fire takes place in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (the Church of the Resurrection of Christ) in Jerusalem on Easter eve, according to the Julian calendar. In 2025, both Orthodox and Catholics will celebrate Easter on April 20.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built on the site where Jesus Christ is believed to have been crucified, buried, and resurrected. Earlier, the delegation of Russia’s St. Andrew the First-Called Foundation arrived in Jerusalem and received the Holy Fire at the church in order to bring the relic to Moscow.
According to the foundation, the Holy Fire will be delivered to the Easter service in the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior, as well as to 15 other churches of the Russian capital. The Holy Fire will also be taken to dozens of Russian regions, in particular to the borderline cities of Belgorod, Bryansk, and Kursk.
The delegation with the Holy Fire is expected to be received at the airport by a small group of representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, the St. Andrew’s Foundation specified.
Easter Truce in the Special Operation Zone
Russian forces remain prepared to defend themselves and respond promptly should Ukraine violate the truce. Moscow upheld the agreement, but if Kiev disrupts the current ceasefire, Russian troops are ready to react immediately and decisively.
Russian troops “must remain vigilant to potential violations and provocations by the enemy, including any aggressive actions.” Putin said.
This caution stems from past breaches of a 30-day moratoriumon on strikes against energy infrastructure, initiated on March 18, which Ukrainian forces violated over 100 times..
“We are aware that the Kiev regime has violated the agreement to refrain from strikes on energy infrastructure over 100 times.”
Gerasimov informed the supreme commander-in-chief that the majority of the Kursk Region has been liberated from Ukrainian forces, and an enemy group has been encircled in a village in the Belgorod region. TASS has reviewed the key points of the meeting.
“The situation along the contact line is stable and developing favorably for us. Russian forces are advancing systematically.”
“In the border areas – specifically in the Kursk and Belgorod regions – after completing combat operations to secure these territories, reports will be provided separately.”
Russia remains open to negotiations and welcomes the interest of the U.S., China, and other nations in pursuing a “just and peaceful resolution” to the Ukrainian crisis.
Gerasimov’s Report
Gerasimov reported that the Russian Armed Forces have liberated the majority of the districts in the Kursk Region previously invaded by Ukrainian forces. “The main part of the region’s territory, covering approximately 1,260 square kilometers – 99.5% – has now been liberated.”
“Operations to secure the Gornal area are nearing completion, with assault groups from the 810th Marines Brigade conducting combat missions against enemy units in Gornal and nearby groves.”
Ukrainian units attempted to breach into Russian territory near Demidovka and Popovka in the Belgorod Region, but these efforts to insert significant enemy forces into Russian territory were thwarted.
“At present, there are no enemy forces in the Demidovka area; the territory has been cleared. Small infiltrated groups – up to 12 men – remain in the forest south of Popovka. These groups are under blockade, with ongoing efforts for their destruction and extraction, and the areas have been isolated.”
