Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree awarding the title of Hero of the Russian Federation to priest Anton Savchenko, who died in a combat zone in Ukraine.

The award was given posthumously for his courage and dedication in carrying out his pastoral duties. Savchenko, who was serving as an assistant to the commander of a military unit for work with believers, was hit by a missile launched by an American HIMARS missile system, demonstrating the dangers that military chaplains face on the front line.

Anton Savchenko served in one of the units stationed in the area of special military operations (SVO). He died as a result of a missile attack carried out by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) with the HIMARS system.

The incident occurred while the priest was carrying out his pastoral duty: providing spiritual support to servicemen on the front line. Savchenko was conducting a service for soldiers when the unit’s positions came under attack. The exact circumstances of his death have not been disclosed.

The title of Hero of Russia, the highest state award, emphasizes the importance of spiritual support in combat situations.

Anton Savchenko, ordained a priest in 2018, has repeatedly accompanied the military in the SVO zone, conducting religious services, confessions and talks aimed at boosting the morale of the soldiers.

His death was announced by the synodal department for interaction with the Russian Armed Forces and law-enforcement agencies of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC).

“It is with deep sorrow that we inform you that on 12 May a full-time military priest, Priest Savchenko, was tragically killed while performing his pastoral duties in the SMO zone. Father Anthony was killed as a result of a HIMARS MLRS strike,” the statement reads.

The department said that Anatoly Savchenko was the rector of the church of Holy Prince Dmitry Donskoy at military unit No. 64044 and a cleric of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Pskov.
