Russian Expert: “Blocking of Strait of Hormuz to trigger oil shock”

The potential blocking of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran will not spare the US, triggering a “global oil shock,” CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and Special Presidential Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries Kirill Dmitriev said.
“Oil is priced globally. If the Strait of Hormuz is shut, the U.S. won’t be spared. No one is immune from a global oil shock – prices at the pump will [skyrocket],” he wrote on the X social network according to TASS Russian News Agency.
On Monday, the price of futures contracts of Brent crude oil for August 2025 delivery has risen above $81 per barrel on London’s ICE for the first time since January 20, according to trading data.
As we explained in the following article, both the IRGC and the Iranian parliament have already approved the decision to close the Strait of Hormuz.
The final decision will probably be taken by the Government after the meeting scheduled for today between the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Russian President Vladimir Putin. It will be up to Russia to evaluate whether blocking the transit of oil tankers in the Persian Gulf could not benefit it in the world crude oil market.

The US attack on Iranian nuclear sites last night has caused turbulence in the oil markets. The price of WTI oil initially jumped up to 13% before stabilizing around $77 a barrel. Analysts expect a strong opening on Monday, June 23, with possible peaks of up to $90 for WTI.
A possible blockade of maritime trade would cause a significant increase in energy prices and a possible global economic crisis. In fact, according to analyses by Oxford Economics, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz could push oil up to $130 a barrel.

Today, according to Russian AviaPro online newspaper, the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping lane for global oil trade, has been the scene of a massive GPS jamming campaign that began on June 22, 2025, and has already affected more than 27 vessels.
According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), automatic vessel identification systems (AIS) are picking up distorted coordinates, showing vessels in Iranian ports, in the deserts of Oman, and even near Dubai, causing chaos in shipping. Among the vessels affected are 27 very large container ships (VLCCs) carrying crude oil, threatening the stability of energy supplies.

Tehran has accused Washington of a “grave violation” of international law and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty after the US military joined Israeli forces in their week-long airstrike campaign against Iranian nuclear facilities and military sites.
Iran will have to respond to US attacks against Iranian nuclear sites, and is going to do so for as long as needed, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said.
On the other hand, Iran’s Fordow nuclear site did not suffer any serious damage in the attack launched by the US, Fars news agency reported on Sunday, citing MP Mohammad Manan Raisi from Qom Province where the facility is located.
The United States have “betrayed diplomacy”, Araghchi said at a press conference held in Istanbul on June 22, adding that Iran now has the right to defend itself in accordance with the UN Charter.
“The US government bears full responsibility for the serious consequences of this aggression,” Araghchi said.
In the wake of the US strikes, Iran has fewer reasons to trust the West, Tehran no longer understands who it should negotiate with, he pointed out.
The IRGC said on Sunday that “the US’s repetition of past failed follies demonstrates strategic incompetence and disregard for the realities on the ground in the region.”
“The number, dispersion, and size of US military bases in the region are not a strength but have doubled their vulnerability,” it added.
China Condemned US Attack on Iran and Bombing of Nuclear Facilities
The Russian Foreign Ministry has condemned the attacks, calling for a diplomatic solution.
“The irresponsible decision to subject the territory of a sovereign state to missile and bomb strikes, no matter what arguments are presented, is a gross violation of international law, the UN Charter, and UN Security Council resolutions, which has previously unequivocally classified such actions as unacceptable.”
China’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the “US attacks on Iran and bombing of nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the IAEA,” characterizing it as a serious violation of the “principles of the UN Charter and international law.”
Beijing argued that Washington’s latest actions have further “exacerbated tensions in the Middle East.” The ministry urged all parties involved in the conflict, “Israel in particular,” to “reach a ceasefire as soon as possible.”
In the wake of the US bombardment of Iranian nuclear facilities, Russia, Chile, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Pakistan and Venezuela have issued similar condemnations of Washington’s attack.
