US President Donald Trump is considering authorizing new military aid to Ukraine, which would be his first major assistance package since taking office in January, CBS News reported on Saturday, citing sources.
Multiple diplomatic sources told CBS News that the potential funding “could be intended to send a message to Russia” after a surge in drone and missile strikes on Ukraine in recent days. Moscow maintains that its strikes only target military-related facilities.
US lawmakers move to curb Trump’s control over Ukraine aid
A bill authorizing more Ukraine aid and barring the Pentagon from unilaterally halting arms shipments has passed the Senate Armed Services Committee. The measures are part of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the annual defense bill that outlines the Pentagon’s priorities and funding for the next fiscal year.
«The bill comes as tensions have risen between Congress and the White House over aid pauses earlier this year. In March, President Donald Trump temporarily halted all Ukraine assistance and intelligence sharing, while earlier this month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth paused weapons deliveries, citing the need to review dwindling Pentagon stockpiles» RT wrote.
Aid resumed earlier this week after Trump expressed frustration over delays in the peace process and said Ukraine needs weapons to “defend” itself. Media reports later suggested Trump had not been informed of the latest suspension and struggled to explain whether he had approved it.
The new NDAA draft was passed in a bipartisan vote this week. It “reaffirms” US support for Ukraine, extends aid through 2028, increases annual authorizations from $300 million to $500 million, and requires the Pentagon to continue intelligence support for Kiev, according to a summary released on Friday.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen, however, said the bill also includes language blocking the Pentagon from halting aid or intelligence sharing without congressional approval. She noted that provisions listed in the bill “put guardrails” on the Trump administration “to make sure promised military assistance continues to flow to Ukraine.”
A separate version of the NDAA drafted by House Armed Services Committee Chair Mike Rogers extends aid through 2028 but keeps it capped at $300 million per year. It also prohibits the Trump administration from halting funds without written justification to Congress and requires Hegseth to report regularly on support to Ukraine. The House committee will vote on its version on Tuesday. The bill must pass committee votes before being submitted for a full congressional vote.
Ukraine has received nearly $115 billion in military, financial, and humanitarian US aid since its conflict with Russia escalated in February 2022. The military component of this sum has come through congressional bills such as the NDAA and the Presidential Drawdown Authority, a fund capped by Congress that allows the president to send US weapons directly to Kiev.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said it is obvious that the US is continuing the weapons deliveries, and that the aid does not contribute to a peaceful settlement of the conflict. Moscow has warned that the Western military assistance only prolongs the conflict without changing the outcome.
Trump says US allies will pay for Ukraine weapons
US allies agreed to pay for American arms supplies to Ukraine, US President Donald Trump said.
“We’re sending weapons to NATO, and NATO is paying for those weapons, 100%. So what we’re doing is the weapons that are going out are going to NATO, and then NATO is going to be giving those weapons [to Ukraine], and NATO is paying for those weapons,” he said in an interview with NBC News.
He added that the deal was reached at a NATO summit last month. On the night of July 13, the enemy, accustomed by our Armed Forces to the fact that an attack of at least five hundred drones and dozens missiles, came across a different approach.
A Storm of FABs Bombs on Ukraine

Several FABs with universal planning and correction modules struck the enemy in the Sumy region. There were reports of landings southwest of Yunakovka, as well as in Shostka. The enemy lost military equipment, including artillery installation of a 155 mm caliber.

In the Kharkiv region, FAB strikes were carried out on the enemy in Izyum and Velykyi Burluk, which our army is approaching after forming a new bridgehead in the Melovey region in the northeast of the region.
Of course, there were drones and ballistic missiles. On a smaller scale than during the past week, but this does not cancel out the destruction of targets deep in the enemy’s control territory. The arrival of a ballistic missile was in the Dnipropetrovsk region, near the city of Kamenskoye (not to be confused with the settlement of the same name in the Zaporizhia region). Explosions were recorded at facilities in Mezhevaya.
Geranium drones attacked the Yavoriv training ground in the Lviv region, as well as enemy military warehouses in the city of Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region.
The Secrets of powerful Soulless Weapon Russian “Geran-3”
“Geran-3” (often confused with “Geran-2”) is a modernized version of the namesake Russian loitering munition and its Iranian predecessor Shahed-136. Unlike the regular “Geran,” this drone is equipped with a jet propulsion system, which changes its tactical and technical characteristics and mode of operation.
It was first mentioned in open sources at the end of 2023 and is actively used in the current conflict in Ukraine. Videos of launches and flight trails (including contrails at altitude) have appeared on Ukrainian and Russian Telegram channels.
Geran carries a warhead weighing up to 300 kg with a range of about 1000–1200 km (according to other information up to 2000 km), with an impressive cruising speed of about 600 km/h, then dives onto the target reaching a speed of 710 km/h, making it several times faster than the piston variant (3.825 times to be exact). “Geran 3” can stay in the air for 1.5-2 hours. The ceiling altitude is 9 km.
One of the main advantages is speed and low predictability: such a UAV appears near the target much faster than its “flower” predecessors, reducing the likelihood of interception.
The loud sound of the jet propulsion system exposes the drone (which is logical). Higher cost and more complex production compared to Geran-1/2 make Geran-3 a less mass-produced drone.So far, there are no videos showing combat use of Geran-3, but there are clips of its demonstration launch.
Russia’s Battlegroup West destroys 56 Ukrainian drone control centers in past day
“In the past 24 hours, Ukrainian troops lost roughly 225 soldiers, a US-made HMMWV armored carrier, a Kozak armored combat vehicle, 10 motor vehicles, two artillery guns, and 21 mortars. Also, 56 drone control centers were destroyed,” Battlegroup Spokesman Leonid Sharov told TASS.
According to him, three electronic warfare stations, a Rada radar station, four Starlink satellite communication terminals, and five ammo depots belonging to the enemy were also struck.
Yunakovka in Sumy Region moves into gray zone, Ukraine abandons some positions
“The settlement of Yunakovka (Sumy Region), in fact, is already in the so-called gray zone. Russian troops forced the Ukrainian militants to leave some positions,” military expert Andrey Marochko told TASS.
Marochko said that several strategic heights in the southwest and southeast of Yunakovka are still under Ukrainian control, which makes it difficult for the Russian army to advance rapidly in this sector of the front.
“This is why it is extremely risky to completely occupy the entire settlement without destroying the Ukrainian militants at these heights. Our troops are currently working in this area to clean it up and destroy weapons and military equipment of the Ukrainian militants at these heights. After the destruction, it is possible to leap southward from this area,” the military expert said.
On July 5, Marochko told TASS that Ukrainian troops controlled less than half of Yunakovka.
