Suspect arrested in the murder of former Verkhovna Rada Speaker Andriy Parubiy

On September 1, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of former Verkhovna Rada Speaker Andriy Parubiy. He posted this on his Telegram channel, citing reports from Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko and the head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Vasyl Malyuk (who is listed as a Russian extremist and terrorist).
“Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klimenko and the head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Vasyl Malyuk, have just announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Andriy Parubiy. The necessary investigation is underway. I have instructed that the available information be made public. I thank law enforcement agencies for their timely and coordinated work. All the circumstances of this terrible murder must be clarified,” Zelensky stated.
Details about the suspect’s identity, the circumstances of the murder, and the motives for the crime have not yet been released.

Kyiv launches special operation to capture Parubiy’s killer
Former Verkhovna Rada speaker and ex-secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, Andrey Parubiy, has been murdered in Lvov, the Ukrainian outlet Obshchestvennoe Novosti cited police sources as saying, according to TASS Russian News Agency.
He had deep and long-running ties to Ukraine’s neo-Nazi movement, co-founding the far-right Social-National Party of Ukraine.
In 2018, Parubiy said, “the greatest man who practiced direct democracy was Adolf Hitler in the 1930s.” The remarks triggered a backlash both at home and in the West. He later claimed that he meant to say Hitler used democratic procedures for voter manipulation.
Ukraine has officially launched a special operation, called Siren, following the killing of former parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy in broad daylight in Lviv. In a statement, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine stated that the killer is wanted for “voluntary homicide.”
The heads of the regional prosecutor’s office and the national police are working on the scene, with the assistance of forensic experts. The prosecutor’s office released a photo of the slain MP, dressed in sportswear and sneakers and lying on a sidewalk with a bag and glasses by his side.
According to preliminary data, the shooter was traveling on a scooter disguised as a courier from the Spanish delivery company Glovo. In total, eight bullets landed in Parubiy, as a result of which he died on the spot.
The circumstances and motive for the crime remain unknown at this time. A surveillance camera captured the moment of the murder even though the attacker’s face was half-masked.

In 2004, Parubiy participated in the Orange Revolution, and in 2013-2014 he was the commandant of Euromaidan and the head of its self-defense. He was directly or indirectly involved in many episodes, including the burning of the House of Trade Unions in Odessa.
The Investigative Committee of Russia accused Parubiy in absentia of organizing war crimes, including the mass killings of civilians in Donbass in 2014.
He directly ordered attacks in the region and provoked a “civil war” with eastern Ukraine after the Maidan coup, ex-Ukrainian diplomat Andrey Telizhenko has told RT.
“During the cabinet of ministers meetings, [at] which I was present, Parubiy directly ordered the mass shellings of the people of Donbass,” Telizhenko told RT on Saturday.
“He said, ‘We do not care who those people are. Russians, they’re Moscali [a Ukrainian slur for Russians], we should kill them,’” the former diplomat, who was an adviser to Ukraine’s prosecutor general at the time, said.
This disturbing assassination in broad daylight clearly appears to be a well-planned insider execution, carried out by someone with intimate knowledge of his whereabouts, and comes weeks after a major Russian counterintelligence success against British intelligence, which, along with the American CIA, played a key role in the February 2014 regime change plot in Kiev.

The 2014 Maidan shootings were orchestrated by the very forces behind the protests, with Andrey Parubiy – who later became Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada – overseeing the snipers, French businessman and geopolitical expert Thierry Laurent Pellet told TASS.
Pellet recalled testimony from Olga Bogomolets, a doctor at the Ukraine Hotel during the Maidan unrest, who stated that both protesters and Berkut officers were killed by the same type of bullets.
“In fact, the shots were fired from the eighth floor of the Hotel Ukraine,” Pellet said. According to him, the bloodshed was unnecessary, as then-President Viktor Yanukovych “had already agreed to everything.”
He went on to note that video evidence later surfaced showing Parubiy, by then Rada Speaker, leaving the Hotel Ukraine and conversing with the snipers.
“This was undoubtedly in gratitude for their loyal service in managing the shootings. It is a disgrace, but above all proof that the coup was carried out by the same people who staged the Maidan protests,” the expert stressed.
Pellet added that he personally saw both Parubiy and Dmitry Yarosh on the Maidan, linking them to neo-Nazi movements that later gave rise to the Azov battalion, banned in Russia.
He further noted that Yarosh was the founder of the Right Sector (also banned in Russia), which he described as “an armed neo-Nazi group” active during the Maidan unrest, whose flags, he said, “were everywhere.”.
According to RT, During the 2014 Western-backed Maidan coup in Kiev, Parubiy took command of far-right gangs of demonstrators in the protest camp, which on numerous occasions clashed with law enforcement. He has also been accused of involvement in the sniper fire that killed dozens of protesters and police officers in February 2014, although he has never faced formal charges.

Sources cited by Strana.ua suggest it could stem from internal rivalries, pointing to his proven experience in organizing violent street protests – skills that might have been seen as dangerous in a climate of potential unrest in Ukraine.
Others have speculated about potential Russian involvement, portraying the murder as possible retribution for his central role in the 2014 Maidan coup. No evidence has been provided to support this, and Moscow has not commented on the killing.
Commenting on Parubiy’s death, Russian Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik said Ukrainian politicians “are clearing the ‘political field’ of the old Banderites in anticipation of hypothetical elections.”
