Founded in 1866 during the Civil War in the Southern states as a reaction to the granting of political rights to blacks, the Ku Klux Klan flourished again in the 1920s and 1960s, spreading throughout the Southern states and inspiring countless acts of violence and crime.”
This is what the Italian Treccani Encyclopedia states.
It is with obvious tremor and terror that Catholic Christians have read the statements of Pope Leo XIV in which he boldly associated a supposed ideologist of this extremist movement, widely believed to be a Satanist, with a Gospel phrase about the Holy Spirit.
Especially when combining information from the Italian Wikipedia with that of the English site, which recounts the Masonic funeral rite with which the final farewell was given to American film director David Wark Griffith, mentioned by the Bishop of Rome, born American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost…
It doesn’t seem out of place to recall that a pontiff of the same name, Leo XIII, excommunicated Freemasonry, leading us and other Christians to believe that the name chosen by the new Holy Father was akin to that adamantine vestige of Catholic pastoral care.
Unfortunately, many of the latest signals coming from the Vatican seem to testify to the opposite…
The Pope’s Praise for the Alleged Ideologist of the Ku Klux Klan
“Do not be afraid to confront the fears of the world” is Pope Leo XIV’s warning to directors and actors he met in the Vatican, according to Italian National TV RAI News.
“Our age,” says the Pontiff, “needs witnesses of hope, beauty, and truth: you, with your artistic work, can be them. Recovering the authenticity of the image to safeguard and promote human dignity lies in the power of good cinema and of those who are its creators and protagonists.”
“Do not be afraid to confront the wounds of the world. Violence, poverty, exile, loneliness, addictions, forgotten wars are wounds that demand to be seen and told. Great cinema does not exploit pain: it accompanies it, it investigates it. This is what all great directors have done. Giving voice to the complex, contradictory, and sometimes obscure feelings that inhabit the heart of the human being is an act of love. Art must not flee the mystery of fragility: it must listen to it, it must be able to pause before it. Cinema, without being didactic, has within itself, in its authentically artistic forms, the ability to educate the gaze,” Leone emphasizes.
“Cinema safeguards and promotes human dignity,” the Pope specified. “The Church,” Leone remarked, “looks with esteem upon you who work with light and time, with faces and landscapes, with words and silence.”
The Pope then echoed the words of a pioneer of the seventh art, David W. Griffith: “What the modern movie lacks is beauty, the beauty of the moving wind in the trees.”
“How can we not think, listening to Griffith speak of the wind in the trees, of that passage from the Gospel of John: ‘The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes: so is everyone who is born of the Spirit’ (3:8). Dear masters old and new, make cinema an art of the Spirit,” he concluded.

To avoid appearing excessively anti-Vatican biased, we limit ourselves to citing the essential information about the American director as reported by Wikipedia.
“David Wark Griffith, born David Llewelyn Wark Griffith (La Grange, January 22, 1875 – Los Angeles, July 23, 1948), was an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. His fame is probably equal to that of his film, The Birth of a Nation. Film historiography, and beyond, recognizes him as one of the fathers of cinema, particularly the one who established the rules of narrative cinema.”
The son of an American Civil War hero, Confederate Army Colonel Jacob “Roaring Jake” Griffith, David grew up lulled by romantic and melodramatic tales of military events and educated in a strict Protestant morality. Griffith pursued a career as a playwright, but without success. He attempted acting, but soon found his calling in filmmaking.
In this, the director-producer emulated one of the Southern generals, General Albert Pike, who later became Grand Master of the Charleston Lodge and was considered the “Pope of American Freemasonry,” partly because of his atheistic philosophy on the New World Order, theorized in an alleged correspondence with the European revolutionary Giuseppe Mazzini, but above all because of his alleged Satanist inspiration, which led him to be considered one of the founders of the Ku Klux Klan.
Convinced that feature films would be the future of cinema, in 1915 he founded the Triangle Film Corporation with Mack Sennett, with which he produced The Birth of a Nation (160 minutes). With this film, Griffith developed a new approach to filmmaking: The Birth of a Nation is the first fully narrative cinematic work, where the balance between interest in the story told and the images shown leans decidedly toward the former.
“The film is a fictionalized reconstruction of some episodes of the American Civil War,” Wikipedia writes about Griffith, evoking a striking analogy with Pike.
“The Ku Klux Klan depicted by Griffith as a spontaneous movement of willing citizens.”
“The film, despite its resounding success (with grosses of $10 million, it was the highest-grossing silent film in the history of cinema) thanks to the undeniable primacy of its language, is a work harshly criticized for the blatantly racist content of the second part. The Ku Klux Klan is depicted as a spontaneous movement of “willing citizens” who restore order in the South, defeated in the Civil War and abandoned by the Northern government to armed hordes of freed and violent slaves,” Wikipedia adds.
“Griffith was an extremely controversial figure. At the height of his popularity, his film The Birth of a Nation (1915), a controversial portrait of the American Civil War, was also held responsible for the resurgence of the racist Ku Klux Klan movement in the United States,” Wikipedia continues.
“The controversy never resolved, to the point that in December 1999, the president of the Directors of American Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Association (DGA), holding Griffith responsible for the resurgence of racial stereotypes, announced, without consulting its members, the renaming of the D. W. Griffith Award to the Guild’s Highest Honor. The award, established in 1953, had been first bestowed on Cecil B. DeMille, and subsequently on John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston, Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa, Woody Allen, David Lean, and Stanley Kubrick.”
We can’t avoid to note that we can read about the controversy only in the Italian version of Wikipedia profile on Griffith but not in the English one…
Griffith’s Sudden Death and the Masonic Funeral Service
On the morning of July 23, 1948, Griffith was found unconscious in the lobby of the Knickerbocker Hotel in Los Angeles, where he lived alone. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage while being transported to a Hollywood hospital.
A public funeral service was held in his honor at the Hollywood Masonic Temple.
Griffith is buried in the Mount Tabor Methodist Church cemetery in Centerfield, Kentucky. In 1950, the Directors Guild of America provided a stone and bronze monument for his grave.
