His fame is probably equal to that of his film, The Birth of a Nation. The son of an American Civil War hero, Confederate Army Colonel Jacob “Roaring Jake” Griffith, David grew up lulled by romantic and melodramatic tales of military events and educated in a strict Protestant morality. Griffith pursued a career as a playwright, but without success. He attempted acting, but soon found his calling in filmmaking.

With this film, Griffith developed a new approach to filmmaking: The Birth of a Nation is the first fully narrative cinematic work, where the balance between interest in the story told and the images shown leans decidedly toward the former.

“The film is a fictionalized reconstruction of some episodes of the American Civil War,” Wikipedia writes about Griffith, evoking a striking analogy with Pike.

“The film, despite its resounding success (with grosses of $10 million, it was the highest-grossing silent film in the history of cinema) thanks to the undeniable primacy of its language, is a work harshly criticized for the blatantly racist content of the second part. W. Griffith Award to the Guild’s Highest Honor. The award, established in 1953, had been first bestowed on Cecil B. Griffith’s Sudden Death and the Masonic Funeral Service

On the morning of July 23, 1948, Griffith was found unconscious in the lobby of the Knickerbocker Hotel in Los Angeles, where he lived alone. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage while being transported to a Hollywood hospital.

A public funeral service was held in his honor at the Hollywood Masonic Temple.

Griffith is buried in the Mount Tabor Methodist Church cemetery in Centerfield, Kentucky. In 1950, the Directors Guild of America provided a stone and bronze monument for his grave.
