Arctic storm in the US: Death toll rises to at least 30
The Arctic storm currently battering the United States shows no signs of abating. The death toll rises, with media reports stating at least 30, including five in New York over the weekend.
Heavy snowfall is giving way to plummeting temperatures, which will delay the return to normality.
Yesterday morning, 820,000 customers were still without power, according to the monitoring site PowerOutage.com, especially in the southern United States.
The situation for air travel also remains complex, following approximately 11,500 canceled flights and nearly 21,000 delayed on Sunday. The cold and icy weather continues, gripping nearly all of the United States and major American cities. Authorities from Texas to North Carolina to New York have urged residents to stay indoors. “Refrain from traveling unless absolutely necessary,” the Texas Division of Emergency Management wrote on X.
The storm moved northeastward since yesterday, Sunday, bringing snow to densely populated cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Boston.
In Washington, sidewalks and streets were covered in several inches of snow, and a state of emergency was declared. “We will continue to monitor and stay in touch with all states along the path of the storm. Stay safe and warm,” President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Authorities finally warned that potentially deadly cold could last up to a week after the storm, particularly in the northern Great Plains and other central regions, where temperatures could feel as low as -45 degrees Celsius (-59 degrees Fahrenheit), with the risk of freezing within minutes.

Winter storm begins, bringing ice, heavy snow to much of the US: 6 Deaths
One million people are without power in the mid-Atlantic and southern United States due to the Arctic storm that has swept across the country. According to CNN, the record cold has also caused the deaths of at least six people, five of them in New York.
The cold snap has disrupted transportation: over 15,000 flights have been canceled following airport closures. Schools in major cities are closed, and classes for Monday have also been canceled or moved to remote learning.
The cold is forecast to persist throughout the week, heightening fears for those who have been without shelter or electricity for days.
Widespread threat: Two-thirds of the US population is facing down a monster winter storm and extreme cold. The storm’s snow and ice will stretch over 2,000 miles from Texas to New England as it tracks east through the weekend.
Catastrophic ice storm: Crippling ice accumulations will weigh down and drop power lines and trees in the most serious icing zones in the South. Hundreds of thousands could lose power, some for days.

Polar Vortex and Major Stratwarming: What is the double cyclone looming over winter
This is a sudden warming of the polar region of the stratosphere. If it becomes intense, the so-called major stratwarming could lead to a weakening and splitting of the polar vortex, with two distinct cyclones sinking and causing strong air turbulence, with consequences that cannot be precisely calculated.
There’s still no certainty, and these are hypotheses—mooted even last year, but fortunately remained just hypotheses—but experts are carefully analyzing the climatic movements of late January.
According to some meteorologists, numerical models increase the probability of a Major Stratwarming developing at the beginning of the coming month, February, which would bring storms to the country. Others say any assessment is still premature.

Sparkling auroras before the devastating storm

“The Earth was hit by a category G4 geomagnetic storm, considered “severe” on a scale ranging from G1 to G5, which began around 8:38 PM (Italian time) on Monday, January 19th. It was triggered by a coronal mass ejection (CME) produced by the Sun on January 18th, associated with a class X1.9 flare (the highest class). Currently, the storm remains a class G4, but forecasts indicate it should downgrade to a G3 storm in the next few hours.”
Several news outlets have called the event “the strongest geomagnetic storm of the last 20 years,” but that’s not the case: just consider that in May 2024, a G5 class was reached. What NOAA actually recorded, however, is the most intense solar radiation storm since 2003. As the Space Weather Prediction Center reports, this is a rare event, with potential risks primarily affecting the operation of satellites and space launch systems.
Geopop experts explain that thanks to the geomagnetic storm, the Northern Lights occurred at lower latitudes than usual: in the early hours of the morning, auroral phenomena were observed in several Central European countries, including France, Germany, and the Netherlands, but also in some areas of Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, and Lombardy. At the moment, it seems unlikely that the phenomenon will repeat itself in the coming hours: forecasts, however, are difficult to make and could prove to be incorrect.
Unfortunately, the reliability of this interpretation is severely undermined by the fact that the consequences of the colorful auroras caused by the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ HAARP station have never been examined and evaluated. Its very purpose, as per its name, is to CAUSE ARTIFICIAL AURORAS with unknown and therefore dangerous impacts on the ionosphere and atmosphere.
Until recent months, the HAARP station regularly sent warnings regarding its geomagnetic bombardment experiments on the ionosphere. But after the May 2024 scandal, when it was accused of causing auroras preceding devastating weather events, it has reduced its official communications.

A massive winter storm is set to impact large swaths of the US this weekend and could deliver historic levels of snow and ice to major cities.
More than 230 million people are under severe weather alerts as the storm begins today.
By the time it ends on Monday, it will have dropped a foot or more of snow and destructive amounts of ice over its 1,500-mile path from Texas to the Northeast.
At least 10 states have already declared a state of emergency, and over 1,300 flights scheduled for Saturday have been canceled as the storm approaches. Widespread power outages are also expected across multiple regions as the system barrels through the country.

Major travel disruption on roads and at airports is expected across the storm’s entire footprint, and widespread and potentially long-lasting power outages are also possible, particularly from its ice storm in the South.
Extreme and record-breaking cold will only worsen the storm and its impacts by causing snow and ice to accumulate faster on roads, making them harder to treat, and possibly leaving those who lose power shivering without heat for days.
Travel and power outage impacts could last into at least early next week for areas that see significant snow and ice.

Cyclone Harry, a powerful Mediterranean storm, has wreaked havoc in Italy’s southern Calabria region as well as on the islands of Sardinia and Sicily, particularly in coastal areas.
The extreme weather has caused extensive damage to roads, buildings and infrastructure, with flooding, landslides and the evacuation of dozens of families from their homes. There have been no reports of fatalities.
Firefighters have responded to more than 1,600 incidents in the three regions over the past few days, with some rescue operations being carried out by dinghy due to the high water levels which have submerged cars and flooded ground-floor buildings.
The most affected areas are Catania and Catanzaro, in Sicily and Calabria respectively, where schools and public offices have been closed.
Viral footage showed massive waves surging into streets in coastal towns, sending people fleeing, destroying a section of the coastal road at Santa Teresa di Riva, near Messina.
Cyclone Harry causes at least $740 million in damage in southern Italy.
According to an initial assessment by the regional Civil Protection Department, the damage caused by Cyclone Harry in Sicily, Italky, currently amounts to €740 million.
This was announced by Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani, during a meeting with journalists at the conclusion of the extraordinary meeting of the Sicilian Regional Council, which approved a state of emergency and an initial allocation of €70 million, €50 million of which will be made available immediately, and the remaining €20 million drawn from global funds through a specific provision that will be proposed to the Sicilian Regional Assembly.

However, just a few kilometers away, the opposite was also true: at Domus de Maria, the sea had brought two Phoenician tombs and several archaeological finds to the surface.

The Ionian coast of Calabria was hit by waves “that reached nine and a half meters, meaning a mass of water as high as a four-story building that crashed onto the shorelines for several hours.”
This is how Fabio Ciciliano, head of the Civil Protection Department, summarized the phenomenon that affected Calabria for days after flying a helicopter over the affected areas of Catanzaro and Reggio Calabria and inspecting the Lido di Catanzaro neighborhood. “We’re talking about an event that impacted with winds of 100/110 kilometers per hour,” he added.
