Iranian Oil Continues to Flow Through the Strait of Hormuz

Iranian crude oil has continued to flow through the Strait of Hormuz at a near-normal pace, even as Tehran-linked attacks on ships in the narrow waterway have decimated exports from other Gulf countries, according to an analysis of tanker tracking data by the British news agency Reuters.

Iran has exported approximately 13.7 million barrels of crude oil since Israel and the United States launched attacks on the country on February 28, according to analysis by TankerTrackers.com, a maritime intelligence firm specializing in tracking the so-called shadow fleet, a network of vessels used to transport oil and gas from countries subject to Western sanctions. Ship-tracking service Kpler estimated that Iranian exports in the first 11 days of March were even higher, at approximately 16.5 million barrels.

Brent crude rose by almost 9% to top $100 (from $74.79) a barrel in Asia trading even after all 32 members of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) said they will release 400 million barrels in response to supply concerns.

On Wednesday, Iran warned that oil could reach $200 a barrel as its attacks on ships intensify in the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for energy shipments. An Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesperson said any vessel linked to the US, Israel or their allies will be targeted.

‍️A fiery hell in the Strait of Hormuz: Iran launches new strikes on tankers

At least 2 oil tankers – an Iraqi and a foreign one – were hit off the coast of Iraq, according to Arab media. The ships “may be linked to the US”, notes the Shafaq News portal.

In the video, oil tankers are burning in Iraqi territorial waters south of Basra. A Chinese container ship suddenly changed its mind about passing through the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian shells hit nearby vessels.

According to Sidhant Sibal, Assistant Editor (Foreign Affairs) at WION, one of the vessel is reportedly owned by a U.S. company, adding a new layer of geopolitical sensitivity to the incident.

The strike triggered a fire on board and forced a dramatic rescue operation as crew members abandoned the vessel in the volatile waters of the Persian Gulf. The attack comes at a time when shipping lanes across West Asia are already on edge due to escalating regional tensions.

Iraqi oil ports suspend operations after attacks on tankers

Oil terminals at Iraqi ports have suspended operations following attacks on tankers, Farhan al-Fartousi, director general of the state-owned General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI), said.

“The operation of oil ports has been suspended, commercial ports continue operations,” he said as quoted by the INA agency.

Dozens of countries agree to release 400 million barrels of oil from their reserves

The International Energy Agency said that member countries had unanimously agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil from their reserves in a bid to ease prices that are soaring due to the Iran war.

Since the war began, U.S. crude oil prices are up more than 25%, and retail gas prices have risen more than 50 cents to a national average of around $3.57 per gallon.

Will they be enough if the war continues until the last Iranian missile, as promised by Iran, which was treacherously attacked by the US and Israel while Tehran was negotiating a nuclear deal with Washington?

IRGC: No crude oil passes through Hormuz for the US

Tehran has reiterated that it will not allow US-owned oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. “We will not allow even a drop of oil to pass through the Strait of Hormuz for the benefit of America and its allies,” said Khatam al-Anbia, spokesman for the Iranian Army-IRC Joint Command.

“It is not possible to artificially keep oil and energy prices low,” he warned.

“The Strait of Hormuz is, without a doubt and without a doubt, under the intelligent management of the valiant naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,” the IRGC said in a statement broadcast on Iranian state television. “The American aggressors and their accomplices have no right of passage,” it reiterated.

IRGC Navy Commander “Any vessel intending to pass must obtain permission from Iran”

The commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Naval Force says any vessel seeking to sail through the Strait of Hormuz must obtain Iran’s approval; otherwise, it could become a target of Iranian attacks.

In a post on his X account on Wednesday, Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri said that two ships that had ignored Iran’s warnings were targeted in the Strait earlier that day.

“Were the ships assured of safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz? This should be asked of the crews of the vessels Express Rome and Mayuree Naree (watch below), who today, trusting in empty promises, ignored the warnings and intended to cross the Strait, but were caught,” the general said in a Farsi-language post.

“Any vessel intending to pass must obtain permission from Iran,” he added.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that the 37th wave of Operation “True Promise 4”

No Iranian or Arab newspaper has confirmed this accusation which could completely block the transit of ships in a point of the Persian Gulf crucial for the world oil market.

Instead, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that the 37th wave of Operation “True Promise 4” was the most intense and heaviest since the start of the war, targeting Israeli and US positions across the region with heavy warheads.

US Navy says Hormuz escorts not possible currently: Reuters

The United States Navy has informed the global shipping industry that it is currently unable to provide military escorts for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz due to the high risk of attacks amid the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran

According to a report by Reuters citing sources familiar with the matter, the Navy has rejected near-daily requests from shipping companies seeking protection for tankers attempting to pass through the crucial waterway since the start of the war.

«Energy Secretary Chris Wright has posted, then deleted, a claim that the United States military provided protection for an oil tanker travelling through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for the global energy trade. The White House later addressed the post in a news briefing, affirming that it was false» Al Jazeera has reported.

The report said the US Navy has been holding regular briefings with representatives from the shipping and oil sectors, during which it explained that it is unable to provide escorts “for the time being” due to the elevated threat environment.

The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff: “a number of options” for the potential escort of oil tankers

The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Kaine, stated that they are currently considering “a number of options” for the potential escort of oil tankers and other vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Three industry sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, said companies have repeatedly asked the Navy during those meetings to deploy escorts for vessels attempting to transit the strait. However, the Navy reportedly maintains that such operations will only become possible once the risk of attacks decreases.

The assessment highlights ongoing disruptions to West Asian oil exports, with maritime traffic through the narrow passageway nearly halting since the aggression on February 28.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors, linking the Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and global sea lanes. Roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply typically passes through the strait, meaning any disruption can have immediate repercussions for global energy markets.
