President Joe Biden in a statement said he was grateful for the decades of work of Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle, who has just resigned. She “dedicated and risked her life to protect the country.” He then promised: “We know that what happened that day can never happen again. I expect to appoint a new director of the Secret Service shortly.”
“I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” Cheatle wrote in an email to staff, obtained by The Associated Press. “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to resign as director.” She has held the position since August 2022. Cheatle’s departure is unlikely to put an end to the fuss around the agency. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have vowed to continue investigating, along with an inspector general investigation and an independent, bipartisan effort launched at the behest of President Joe Biden that will keep the agency in the spotlight. “Scrutiny over the past week has been intense and will continue to be as our operational tempo increases,” Cheatle said in her note to her staff.
The Hearing
The director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, responded to the commission’s questions yesterday, admitting that she was facing “the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades”. She then added: “The solemn mission of the secret service is to protect the leaders of our nation. On July 13th we failed.”
In her testimony—alone and under subpoena—Cheatle had to provide many answers to what is essentially a single question: How did the biggest intelligence failure of the past four decades come about under her watch?
“What I can tell you is that for the July 13 event, the services requested, the resources requested for that day were provided,” he stated, then declining to answer specific questions about the security plan for that day, stating that the matter is under internal investigation. For this reason, both Republicans and Democrats on the commission expressed disappointment. “You don’t make our job easy,” Democrat Shontel Brown said, for example, when faced with questions left unanswered by Cheatle.
On Sunday, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) released preliminary findings relating to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during his July 13, 2024 campaign rally in Butler, PA. Immediately following the shooting, Senator Johnson’s office began contacting federal, state, and local government entities as well as private companies seeking information about the security failures at the rally. The preliminary findings released today are based on the initial information the senator’s office obtained over the last week.

The senator Ron Johnson is sharing this information with the public to be transparent and to ensure that all entities examining the assassination attempt are equipped with this information. The five preliminary findings are listed below:
- Secret Service did not attend a security briefing provided to local special weapons and tactics (SWAT) and sniper teams the morning of July 13, 2024;
- Local law enforcement said communications were siloed and they were not in frequent radio contact directly with Secret Service;
- Local law enforcement notified command about Crooks prior to the shooting and received confirmation that Secret Service was aware of the notification;
- Following the shooting Secret Service was seen on the roof of the American Glass Research (AGR) building with local law enforcement; photos of the shooter were sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) for facial recognition; and
- Secret Service was initially not going to send snipers to the rally, according to local law enforcement.
A timeline is also enclosed with these preliminary findings highlighting significant events based on information obtained by the senator’s office.
DEEP STATE Could Take ‘Another Shot’ at Trump – Two Former US Officials
On July 14, 2024, Senator Johnson wrote to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray demanding a preservation of records, information relating to the security of the Butler rally, background information on the alleged gunman, and all texts and communications between law enforcement agents, including Secret Service personnel, relating to the rally from July 11, 2024 to July 14, 2024.
To date, the Department of Justice (DOJ), DHS, and FBI have failed to provide any of the requested information and have not even confirmed that they will preserve the relevant records. The federal agencies’ continued lack transparency with both Congress and the American public is entirely unacceptable.
Senator Johnson’s office will continue to pursue the truth and in doing so, encourages anyone with relevant information on the July 13, 2024 assassination attempt or the alleged shooter to come forward to his office and email his whistleblower account: Whistleblower_PSIJohnson@hsgac.senate.gov.
