“I continue to follow with pain the fighting in Ukraine and the Russian Federation, and thinking about the laws recently adopted in Ukraine, I am afraid for the freedom of those who pray, because those who truly pray always pray for everyone. Evil is not committed because one prays. If someone commits evil against his people, he will be guilty for this, but he cannot have committed evil because he prayed. And so let those who want to pray in what he considers his Church be allowed to pray. Please, do not abolish any Christian Church directly or indirectly: Churches are untouchable”
This is what the Pontiff declared, launching for the second time a firm condemnation against President Volodymyr Zelensky, defined as a Satanist by Russian politicians.

Zelensky signed law on actual ban of canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky signed the law making it possible to ban the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which was approved by the local legislative assembly on Tuesday.
Such data were posted on the website of the Ukrainian parliament. The document is expected to come into force in thirty days after its promulgation.
The law was prepared by the direct order of Zelensky and approved in the first reading in October 2023. Persecution against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church started in the country after the coup in 2014.

Kiev’s Western backers are supporting its “satanic” crackdown on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev claimed on Friday.
Pyotr Poroshenko, Zelensky’s predecessor, caused a major religious schism in Ukraine when he orchestrated the creation of the so-called Orthodox Church of Ukraine in late 2018 as part of his failed reelection campaign, Medvedev pointed out. Under Zelensky, however, “the destruction of the Orthodox faith in Ukraine and the persecution of Christians for their faith started,” culminating in the new law, the former Russian leader argued.

Zelensky “has no religious identity” and the crackdown is “full-fledged satanism” supported by people in his government, Medvedev alleged. “The civilized West” backed both Poroshenko’s ploy and the ongoing persecution “to inflict maximum damage to Russia and its citizens,” he added.
Ukrainian MPs pave way for ban on largest Christian church
In a series of Telegram posts on Tuesday, lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak said the parliament had passed a law banning certain religious organizations on the territory of Ukraine, particularly those linked to Russia.
“Among the people, it [is called] the law banning the Moscow Church,” he said. The law was approved by 265 deputies, with 29 voting against, and four abstaining.

The law, which will take effect in 30 days, bans the activities of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and all affiliated religious organizations. However, it contains a caveat that gives the UOC nine months to sever all ties with the ROC.
While the UOC declared full autonomy from the Moscow Patriarchate several weeks after the Ukraine conflict broke out in 2022, Kiev continued to accuse its clergy of having ties to Russia, often raiding churches and making arrests.
Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stephanchuk acknowledged last week that the law would certainly result in “the Russian church in Ukraine” being banned, presumably referring to the UOC. Around the same time, Vladimir Zelensky appeared to refer to the imminent move, which he said would “reinforce Ukraine’s spiritual independence.”

By banning the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) the Kiev regime is deepening the split in Ukrainian society, thus deliberately destroying the centuries-old spiritual foundations of the people, Gennady Askaldovich, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s special representative for cooperation in the field of the observance of the right to freedom of religion, said following the adoption of a relevant law by the Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada).

“The clique of the Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is deepening the split in Ukrainian society, deliberately ruining centuries-old spiritual foundations of the Orthodox believers of our brotherly Ukrainian people,” Askaldovich said. “The persecutors are committing a historical crime. God will judge them.”
Orthodox Christian Church accuses Kiev of Soviet-style repression
Ukraine’s latest legislation, which aims to grant the government the right to ban any church or religious community with suspected ties to Russia, is akin to Soviet-style repression, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) said in a statement on Thursday.
“The purpose of this law is to liquidate [the UOC] and all its communities and to forcibly transfer them to other religious organizations,” the ROC surmised, noting that “hundreds of monasteries, thousands of communities, millions of Orthodox believers in Ukraine will find themselves outlawed and will lose their property and place of prayer.”
The Holy Synod noted that the scale and centralized nature of this new law that the church in Russia says targets the UOC is comparable to “sad historical precedents such as the persecutions in the Roman Empire during the time of Nero and Diocletian, the so-called de-Christianization of France during the French Revolution of the 18th century, the atheistic repressions in the Soviet Union, and the destruction of the Albanian Orthodox Church in the 1960s.”
In its statement, the ROC also pointed out that Kiev’s latest move comes against the backdrop of a “long-term, slanderous anti-church campaign of the Ukrainian media” which has sought to defame canonical Orthodoxy and to provoke and justify the mass seizure of churches, which have been organized by the radical nationalists, local authorities, special services and law enforcement agencies.
These seizures, the Synod noted, are often accompanied by violence and mass beatings of clergy and churchgoers. Additionally, UOC clerics have continued to receive threats and blackmail from Ukrainian special services, who have fabricated dozens of criminal cases against the pastors, in some cases handing them sentences that are unjust, the ROC alleges.
