Nine killed in Israeli attack on Lebanon as retaliatory strikes test ceasefire
At least nine people were killed in a wave of Israeli air strikes on southern Lebanon on Monday evening, raising fears of an all-out war resuming less than a week after a ceasefire came into effect.
Five people were killed and two wounded in a strike on the village of Haris in Bint Jbeil, according to the state-run National News Agency, with four killed and one wounded in a strike on Talousa. Two people, including a member of Lebanon’s security troops, were killed in separate strikes earlier in the day, while dozens of strikes were reported across the south on Monday evening.
A ceasefire came into effect last Wednesday after more than a year of cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, escalating into all-out war in September and an Israeli ground invasion of Lebanon in October.
Almost 4,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across Lebanon since October last year, which have displaced more than 1.4 million people and wiped entire villages off the map.
Israel said the Monday night strikes were in response to Hezbollah rocket fire on a military post in the occupied Shebaa Farms, which the militant group claimed was retaliation for Israeli “violations” of the truce. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said the military would respond “forcefully” to what he described as “severe” violations of the agreement, while Israel has repeatedly said it would resume attacks on Lebanon if Hezbollah violates the truce.
“Israel demands that the relevant parties in Lebanon fulfil their responsibilities and prevent Hezbollah’s hostile activity,” the Israeli army added following the attacks.
Lebanese parliament speaker: Israel violates ceasefire 54 times in southern Lebanon
Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri demands that Israel stop violating the terms of the ceasefire and withdraw its troops from the Lebanese territory. “The Israeli occupational forces continue their aggressive actions. They have violated the ceasefire that was declared last week 54 times,” he said in a statement posted on the X social network.
“Israeli bulldozers continue tearing down houses in border villages, artillery is shelling the area and aircraft are making flights inside Lebanon’s territory,” he noted.
“We draw the attention of the technical committee for monitoring the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1701 to these numerous violations and call on it to put an end to them by forcing the invaders to leave the Lebanese soil,” Berri stressed.
Hezbollah Carries Out First Attack on Israeli Occupation Sites in Response to Ceasefire Violations
The Islamic Resistance carried out on Monday its first attack on Zionist military sites since the ceasefire took into effect last Wednesday, November 27, 2024, targeting Ruwaisat Al-Alam occupation post in KfarShuba Hills area.
In statement, Hezbollah military media announced that the operation came in response of the Zionist violations of the ceasefire, which left martyrs and injuries among the civilians in the various Lebanese areas.
In response to repeated violations by the “Israeli” enemy of the ceasefire agreement announced to take effect at dawn on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, which have included various forms of aggression, such as firing on civilians and conducting airstrikes in different areas of Lebanon—resulting in the martyrdom of civilians and injuries to others—and the continued breach of Lebanese airspace by enemy aircraft, even reaching the capital Beirut, the Islamic Resistance carried out an initial defensive and warning response this evening, Monday targeting “Ruwaisat Al-Alam” site, belonging to the “Israeli” enemy army in the occupied Lebanese hills of Kfar Shuba, according to the statement.
In a blatant violation of the ceasefire and the Lebanese sovereignty, the Israeli enemy escalated Monday its attacks on South Lebanon and Bekaa, leaving one martyr, two injuries, and materialistic losses.
Israel prohibits residents of 60 villages in southern Lebanon from returning home
The Israeli army has imposed a ban on the movement of civilians in southern Lebanon, prohibiting residents of over 60 villages in border areas from returning home,
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesperson Avichay Adraee said on the X social media platform.
Civilians are prohibited from moving south of an imaginary line connecting ten Lebanese settlements on the border with Israel. According to the army statement, those moving south of the line may endanger themselves.
In addition, the Israeli army released a list of more than 60 Lebanese villages where residents were prohibited from returning.
